4A Useful Assistive Device  May 29, 2010 By Laurz
This item is a fairly useful device; however, in order to be used with the chair for which I intended it, the rear cross brace on the base needed to be left off in order to slide the unit under the chair, which made the assembly less stable. Be sure that the base of the unit will fit under the chair or couch you are using, and be aware that if you wish to use it with a recliner, the front of the assembly will prevent the extension of the footrest when the device is in place.

3Great idea but screws need constant tightening to remain solid  Jul 08, 2011 By TangledUpNBigBlue
I bought this for my blind, elderly father to help him out of his favorite chair, a recent pin-stroke has left him with weakness on his left side & raising himself is now a challenge.
Assembly is easy despite the provided illustrations; when first assembled the unit feels fairly solid given the lightweight materials and is a big help to dad in raising himself out of his chair. The handles adjust so I'm sure it would function well for people of various heights. Dad is 5'6" & 112 lbs and it works well for him; a larger, heavier person might find the unit a bit flimsy especially after some use which is wherein the only issue I have with the unit arises. I have to check the assembly screws & re-tighten them every few days or the unit becomes quite wobbly. If not I fear the unit would eventually come apart & dump dad as he tries to raise himself. With that warning I recommend the unit; if the person using it is elderly or blind & unable to regularly tighten the assembly screws they may well be in for a nasty fall. Since dad lives with my wife & I and I can regularly tighten the unit it works for our purposes; were he living alone I would seek another solution.
For the price it is a decent, functional solution --just please be mindful of its' limitations before you buy.

5a great product, IF you make some DIY upgrades  Mar 24, 2012 By feedthecat
I bought a couple of these for my aunt and put one under her fav armchair and another under her loveseat. She's found them very helpful and so will you if this product is used with care.

First off, as it's held together with screws, which will, of course, loosen with repeated use, use metal "lock" washers when assembling it (you'll need 8, which have to be bought separately). Second, as the tubing is quite thin (maybe an inch in diameter), it can only be used under an armchair, loveseat, or sofa that has a FLAT bottom (if the chair has legs that are over an inch high, you'll have to get a couple of 2x4's - or however high the bottom of the chair is off the ground - and cut some grooves into them to slide the Riser legs under and then slide the 2x4's and the Riser under the chair). Third, as the Riser has two cross braces in the front, this product obviously cannot be used with a recliner. And, lastly, since this product is made of hollow metal tubing, the vertical supports will likely "wobble" - if not get damaged i.e. bent - if used by someone over, say, 200 lbs who has weak legs and, therefore, has to mainly use their arms to egress from a chair.

BTW, for added assistance in getting in and out of chairs (esp for individuals who have weaker knees/legs), I recommend the UPEASY POWER SEAT or SEAT ASSIST the former of which I've paired with the Riser for added stability/security (and which MUST be used on top of a flat, level, relatively hard surface for it to work properly [I simply discarded the seat cushion from my aunt's chair, put a piece of plywood on the chair, put the Power Seat on top of the wood, and then covered the seat of the Power Seat, which is a bit on the hard side, with a slip-on cushion for greater comfort]).

1Cheaply-made  Dec 13, 2011 By Alexander Olszewski
Even brand new and with the screws tightened, it still wobbles. I wouldn't trust anyone to this flimsy device, so I'm returning it for something better.

5Gives a little boost  Nov 08, 2011 By Blah Blah "blahblah"
My Mom was too weak for the product to work. I gave it 5 stars because as a healthy adult with bad knees it worked just fine for me, since I don't really need help up from a chair.
If you just need a little boost, it would work well. If you need more than that, don't bother to buy it! I ended up buying a lift chair for my Mom.
