32 vs. 9 LEDs. Jan 01, 2010
By Samuel Chell You can never have too many flashlights, especially if you live in a big old house and stay up after 7 P.M. (I occasionally try to imagine life in my grandparents' gaslit farmhouse after dark, and with no TV or computer!) These pocket-sized LED lights are more dependable than they were just a year or two ago, but there's a bit of controversy among Amazon reviewers, at least one of whom insists that the 9-LED Neiko for under five dollars is as bright as a 28-LED Neiko at almost three times the price. The extra LED lights, it's contended, simply "diffuse" rather than "amplify" the projected light beam. Since I had a blue 9-LED Neiko, I decided to put it in the ring with the Bell & Howell "muscle" light depicted here. Observations:
1. The cheap Neiko comes with batteries (not surprising). The Bell and Howell doesn't (somewhat surprising, especially for a "keychain-type" light).
2. The proponents of the illuminating power of the smaller flashlight would appear to have a point--to a degree. Although the 32-LED Bell & Howell light is brighter, it's not "super" bright when compared to the 9-LED Neiko, which casts a circle almost as large and bright as its big brother. In other words, 32 LEDs doesn't produce a dramatic difference in the intensity of the beam--it's not twice as bright let alone 23/32 brighter than the Neiko overachiever (which even comes in colors).
If you decide to order the beefier Bell & Howell, you've come to the right place. At another page on Amazon, the identical light is going for more than twice the price listed here. (Just be sure to have 3 AAA's lying in wait.) [Late update: the price has suddenly doubled. Well, maybe this one comes with batteries.]
(As a final comparison, I went to a Maglite using two AA's. At first it seemed a distant third, until I realized I was responding more to "white balance" than to brightness. LEDs do nicely in terms of illuminating the world, but they also "bleach out" some of the color that our ancestors certainly were sensitive to. As a result, I'm going to think twice before purchasing one of those new flat-screens with the LED technology.)

By Sugy I had one and wanted another one I liked it so much I now own 2 and do they ever work well and for such a small flashlight. It shows up well for what you need to see better than a regular flashlight. I and my husband use it alot he has his and I have mine.

truly great product Feb 21, 2010
By Sister Cuthbert I wanted an easy, reliable, VERY BRIGHT flashlight that would project 50 feet in an old dark cellar and also be useful for night walking to see at least the road ahead. I was tired of dim flashlights and saw lots of bad reviews for other LED flashlights. This product is exactly right and solid. The only disadvantage is lack of a loop to attach it to a keychain, but the handle has ridges so it's easy to wind a solid wire around it to create an attachment loop to prevent it from being dropped easily. Great tool.

By Elizabeth Bailey Received product as promised. Very nice light and it is very bright and is what I need every time. It is as bright a few weeks later as it was when first received. I would purchase another. For now this one works very well.
